I'm loving | August

Chef Kat took a picture of a lake in Colorado on a hike

It’s all about back to school.

The month of August for me is about change. I can just feel it in the air. With Fall so close, you just know things are changing.

My girls are off to school today to begin 3rd and 4th grade – how that happened, I do not know.  New teachers and friends, a schedule and routine we may have been wanting and navigating our needs in this chapter.

I’m personally looking forward to my kids having some time with their peers and being influenced by new energetic teachers. I’m ready to tackle more work, figure out my home renovations and just be able to clear the air without sibling arguments…at least until 3pm.

Kid friendly foods during the school year.

What I told my daughters.

I remember feeling totally lost, alone and overwhelmed with a new school year.

You know, that excited yet nervous feeling.

I can feel it in my girls.

What I did tell them.

“I can understand how you are feeling – it’s all so new and exciting but also unknown. If you are feeling a certain way – there is probably another student feeling the same way. You aren’t alone. You can talk to me about anything. I will not judge you. I will support you. We will figure things out together. New things can be scary but also can be exciting. We’ve got this together. You will rock this school year”.

It may not be perfect but I feel like if we make it a positive experience our perspective may change.

School lunch boxes, backpacks + sneakers.

PlanetBox are amazing stainless steel lunch boxes – with all the compartments that you need! Plus added containers to add dips, dressings and small treats.

LL Bean back pack’s are just a staple for me (a Maine girl).

We love these Hydro Flasks – I mean they stay cold all day long.

If your kids don’t own Converse, then you should. Starts everyday out better, I swear.

Fun things I try to do for them.

  • Write a note in their lunchbox – a funny joke or something I admire about them.
  • Put a sticker or picture in their pocket.
  • Get a fun magazine or book from the library – put it on their seat in the car at pick up.
  • Ask them how they can do a small act of kindness today.

Recipes that I make on repeat during the year.

Wishing everyone an amazing school year. Holding hands with all the working Moms (and Dad’s) as we navigate it all.

Be well.

xoxo K
