Basil Garlic Butter Steak
Revised from 2020.
Nothing says a long weekend more than firing up your grill and cooking a great steak. Then with all the fresh herbs (and garlic too) and butter, spread it all over the juicy steak.
I love grilling vegetables, halved onions, and potatoes. Less dishes and all the heat is outside. What do you love to grill?
Remember to let your steak rest, before you slice into it. It will give it time for the juices to natural redistribute and it keeps all the delicious flavor inside the steak.
Adding in fresh garden flavor to your grilled steak just got SOO simple and good.
Fresh basil, garlic + BUTTER! It’s really that easy. You will be making this again and again.
Make your own Compound Butter
Compound butter was a huge thing in Culinary School. We made freshly made baguettes everyday and what’s better than some herb and garlic butter to slather on the warm fresh out of the oven bread.
Here are some fun combinations to try.
- Lemon zest and Lavender
- Garlic, Thyme and Basil
- Red pepper flakes, smoked paprika and honey
- Black Pepper and Lemon zest

Ingredients
- 1 tri tip steak, room temperature
- salt and pepper
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil
- 4 tablespoons butter, room temperature/softened
- 1 cup fresh basil, roughly chopped
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1 pinch red pepper flakes
Instructions
- Preheat your grill on high heat. Sprinkle the steak liberally with salt and pepper on both sides. Spoon the oil over the steak.
- When the grill is hot, add the steak and cook for 6-8 minutes without moving it.
- Meanwhile, made the basil garlic butter. Combine the butter, basil, garlic and red pepper flakes in a small bowl. Mix with a spoon or butter knife. Add in a small pinch of each salt and pepper. Mix everything together. Set a side.
- Flip the steak over and cook for another 6-8 minutes or until the center has reached the temperature you like. Remove from the grill and let sit.
- You can either spread the basil garlic butter over the steak while it rests or wait until after you slice it. I like to slice it and then spread it on so that when it melts it goes down into the sides and crevices of each piece. So good.
